A paladin is the ranging champion and defender of a deity's faith. More overtly militant than a cleric, the paladin lives not only to serve his deity but also to defend against, or actively persecute, enemies of the faith. In return for their devotion, they are granted divine power, which must be used according to principles of the deity's philosophy and morality.

Party Role: Paladins defend their allies as well as their faiths, and can be the central pillars of the party's front line in combat. As representatives of their faiths, they are also often the party's "face", filling the role of diplomat.

Restrictions: Unlike standard rules, paladins of Caraonis are not limited to a particular alignment. Rather, each must adhere to the alignment of his or her chosen deity. Further, Demaia's faith does not include its own paladins as such, as the concept of any militant follower is an anathema to her religious principles. Alignment-Based Abilities
Paladins of Caraonis are not limited only to lawful good deities. A paladin is granted a variant of the usual powers based on each deity's portfolio, as shown in the table below.

detect alignment
A paladin must choose one detection power at first level. Another may be used instead, but using the ability in this way exhausts it for 24 hours.
Smite Alignment (Su)
Paladins of true neutral deities may use the smiting power against any target, but may use it only once per day; the ability does not scale.
Lay On Hands (Su)
Paladins of evil deities inflict damage with this power instead of healing wounds. This power channels negative energy and may thus repair damage to undead creatures. A paladin of a morally neutral deity must choose to either heal or injure with this power at 2nd level, when this ability is gained.
Aura of Courage/Fear (Su)
Good paladins grant a +4 morale bonus to saving throws against fear for all allies within 10 feet. Evil paladins impose a -4 morale penalty to saving throws against fear for all enemies within 10 feet; this may be opposed by an additional Will save (DC 10+Lv). Neutral paladins must choose one or the other at 3rd level, when the ability is gained. All paladins still gain immunity to fear as part of this ability.
Turn/Rebuke Undead (Su)
Good paladins use this power to turn or destroy undead. Evil paladins instead rebuke or command undead. Neutral paladins must choose whether to turn or rebuke at 4th level, when this ability is gained.
Special Mount (Sp)
Deities of Caraonis grant this power in a way that does not involve the conjuration of a mount from outside the Great Planar Barrier. When a paladin reaches 5th level, the soul of a suitable mount is bound to the paladin. Casting detect magic in the vicinity of a paladin at this level reveals a faint aura of conjuration(creation) magic around the paladin.
Once per day, as a full-round action, the paladin may manifest this soul as a living mount, condensing the magical aura around him into a physical form. While the paladin's mount is fully manifested, its soul is no longer detectable as an aura around the paladin.
All other aspects of this ability function as described in the standard ruleset.
Contagion/Remove Disease (Sp)
Good paladins gain remove disease as a spell-like ability usable once a week. Evil paladins gain contagion instead. Neutral clerics must choose which power to gain at 6th level, when the ability is granted.
alignment-based spells
The standard spell list for paladin expects that the paladin's alignment is lawful good. Since paladins may now be of any alignment, this list is altered to fit the alignment of each patron deity. Consult the table above to find out which groups of alignment-specific spells are granted by your paladin's deity, then check the list below to find the spells that are available at each level. A spell with no alignment marks is available to all paladins.

The good version of this power is Aura of Courage (as paladin); the evil version is Touch of Cowardice (as antipaladin). Neutral paladins must choose one or the other at 3rd level, when the ability is gained.
Mercy / Cruelty (Su)
The good version of this power is Mercy (as paladin); the evil version is Cruelty (as antipaladin). If there is a choice involved, the ability gained must be the one that corresponds to the choice of Lay On Hands or Touch of Corruption at 2nd level.
Turn/Rebuke Undead (Su)
Good paladins use this power to turn or destroy undead. Evil paladins instead rebuke or command undead. Neutral paladins must choose whether to turn or rebuke at 4th level, when this ability is gained.
Divine Boon (Sp)
This ability combines the standard Divine Bond and Fiendish Boon as appropriate for each deity of Caraonis.
Weapon Enhancement
This boon works as described except that the special weapon qualities available are chosen from the table above. It is not granted by the spirit of an outsider, but instead comes from a soul imbued by the deity into the paladin's holy symbol. The paladin must be wearing his holy symbol in order to use this ability.
Mount
Deities of Caraonis grant this ability by touching an existing animal and imbuing it with divine power. When a paladin reaches 5th level, the creature feels this bond and finds the paladin at his location. When the paladin touches the mount for the first time, it transforms into an incorporeal aura which is forever bound to the paladin. Casting detect magic in the vicinity of a paladin at this level reveals a faint aura of conjuration(creation) magic around the paladin.
Once per day, as a full-round action, the paladin may manifest this soul into its original animal form. While the paladin's mount is fully manifested, its soul is no longer detectable as an aura around the paladin.
All other aspects of this ability function as described in the standard ruleset.
Aura of Resolve / Aura of Despair (Su)
As paladin or antipaladin, respectively.
Aura of Justice / Aura of Vengeance (Su)
This ability is not limited to smiting good or evil; whatever smite ability is used by the paladin may be extended to allies within range whose own alignment is compatible.
Aura of Faith / Aura of Sin (Su)
This is ability is based on whatever smite power was gained by the paladin at 2nd level. For paladins without an aligned smite power, this ability simply grants a +1 cumulative bonus against damage reduction within 10 feet.
Aura of Righteousness/Depravity/Truth/Lies (Su)
Righteousness grants DR 5/evil and each ally within 10 feet gains a +4 morale bonus vs. compulsion effects. Depravity grants DR 5/good and each foe within 10 feet suffers a -4 morale penalty vs. compulsion effects. Truth grants DR 5/chaos and gives the morale bonus. Lies grants DR 5/law and imposes the morale penalty. Paladins of true neutral deities gain DR 5/magic and grant no morale bonus.
Holy/Unholy/Axiomatic/Anarchic Champion (Su)
Damage reduction rises to 10 over evil, good, chaos, and law, respectively; true neutral paladins gain DR 10/magic instead.
